PMJJBY
PMJJBY claim rejected or delayed? What to do next.
Last updated 23 October 2026.
The short answer. If a PMJJBY death claim is delayed or rejected, ask the bank for the reason in writing, then escalate to the insurer’s grievance officer, register on Bima Bharosa, and approach the Insurance Ombudsman if it is still unresolved. The scheme gives ₹2 lakh life cover for ₹436 a year, so check the premium debit and nominee details first.
Your options
Your options, in order.
PMJJBY is a one-year renewable life cover, taken through your bank account. Claims usually stall on paperwork between the bank and the insurer.
- 1. Ask the bank branch for the reason. Ask in writing why the claim is pending or rejected, and whether the premium was debited and the cover was in force on the date of death.
- 2. Write to the bank’s nodal officer. If the branch does not resolve it, escalate in writing and keep proof of delivery.
- 3. Write to the insurer’s grievance officer. Send your earlier letters with the death certificate, the passbook showing the premium debit, and the nominee’s papers.
- Register on Bima Bharosa. This is IRDAI’s online grievance portal. It states that a registered complaint will be attended to within 14 days.
- Approach the Insurance Ombudsman. If the insurer has rejected your complaint, has not replied within a month, or the reply is not acceptable, you can complain to the Insurance Ombudsman within one year. There is no fee, and compensation sought should not exceed ₹50 lakh.

Why PMJJBY claims stall
Common reasons, and what to check.
The reason given decides what your reply must address. These come up most often.
- Premium not debited in time. The cover runs from 1 June to 31 May and renews by auto-debit. Check your statement for the debit date.
- Age or eligibility. The scheme is for ages 18 to 50, with cover continuing to age 55 for those who joined before 50.
- Death soon after joining. There is a 30-day waiting period for death other than by accident. Check the date of enrolment.
- Nominee or KYC mismatch. The deceased’s and the nominee’s names must match across every document. Mismatches are a common reason for returns.
- Delay between bank and insurer. Ask the bank for the date the claim was forwarded and the acknowledgement.

Questions
Common questions.
PMJJBY claim not paid: what now?
Ask the bank in writing for the reason and the date the claim went to the insurer. If it is still unresolved, escalate to the insurer’s grievance officer, then Bima Bharosa, then the Insurance Ombudsman.
How much does PMJJBY cover and what is the premium?
It gives ₹2 lakh life cover to people aged 18 to 50, at ₹436 a year, auto-debited from the bank account.
Can the bank reject a PMJJBY claim?
The bank collects the claim and forwards it to the insurer. A rejection is usually the insurer’s decision, based on the papers the bank sent, so ask for the reason in writing.
Who do I complain to about a PMJJBY claim?
Start with the bank branch and its nodal officer, then the insurer’s grievance officer, then Bima Bharosa, then the Insurance Ombudsman. The Ombudsman’s office decides whether a particular complaint is within its scope.
What papers does a PMJJBY claim need?
Usually the claim form, proof of death, the nominee’s KYC and bank details, and proof of enrolment. The claim form asks that it be sent preferably within 30 days of the death. Your bank will confirm the current form.
