The short answer. If a PMSBY accident claim is delayed or rejected, ask the bank for the reason in writing, escalate to the insurer’s grievance officer, register on Bima Bharosa, and approach the Insurance Ombudsman if it is still unresolved. The scheme pays ₹2 lakh on accidental death or total disability, and ₹1 lakh on partial disability, for ₹20 a year.
Your options
Your options, in order.
PMSBY is a one-year renewable accident cover for ages 18 to 70, taken through a bank account. Claims usually stall on missing police or medical papers.
- 1. Ask the bank branch for the reason. Ask in writing why the claim is pending or rejected, and whether the premium was debited and the cover was in force on the date of the accident.
- 2. Write to the bank’s nodal officer. If the branch does not resolve it, escalate in writing and keep proof of delivery.
- 3. Write to the insurer’s grievance officer. Attach your earlier letters, the police and medical papers, and the passbook showing the premium debit.
- Register on Bima Bharosa. This is IRDAI’s online grievance portal. It states that a registered complaint will be attended to within 14 days.
- Approach the Insurance Ombudsman. If the insurer has rejected your complaint, has not replied within a month, or the reply is not acceptable, you can complain to the Insurance Ombudsman within one year. There is no fee, and compensation sought should not exceed ₹50 lakh.

Why PMSBY claims stall
Common reasons, and what to check.
The reason given decides what your reply must address. These come up most often.
- Premium not debited in time. Check your statement for the debit date against the date of the accident.
- Police or medical papers missing. Death claims need the FIR or panchnama, post-mortem report and death certificate. Disability claims need a civil surgeon’s certificate.
- Cause or extent of disability disputed. Ask for the reason in writing and which document it rests on.
- Nominee or bank details mismatch. Names and account details must match across the form and the documents.
- Delay between bank and insurer. Ask the bank for the date the claim was forwarded and the acknowledgement.
